Gamesday Baltimore!

Tuesday, 17. August 2010 7:23

I will be attending Games Workshop’s big convention, GAMESDAY BALTIMORE, on Aug 21st, and signing all day. I’ll also be doing a q+a and reading from Bloodforged, the sequel to Bloodborn, from 11:45 to 12:45. Come by if you’re in the area and hang out. It’ll be an author battle royal all day, with me, Dan Abnett, Gav Thorpe, C.L. Werner and Mike Lee in a steel cage fighting to see who is top of the Black Library heap.

Don’t tell anyone, but I’m going to break the rules and use a folding chair. What else would you expect from a blackheart?

Comic Con and the Scribe Awards

Monday, 19. July 2010 11:01

I have completely fallen down on this blog, and shame on me. I will try to get it going again soon, but not until after San Diego Comic Con. However, if you’re coming to the con, maybe I’ll see you there and I can fill you in on things in person. I will be there from Thursday afternoon until Sunday evening, mostly just wandering around and spending too much money.

I will, however, be attending one event. I am a nominee for the 2010 Scribe Awards for Shamanslayer, and will be attending the Scribe Awards Ceremony, then participating in the panel afterwards. The Scribe Awards will be held on Friday afternoon from 5:00 to 6:30 in room 4, wherever that is. HERE are the details from the programming guide. If you can make it, I would love to see you there, and if you happen to bring any of my books, I would be happy to sign them, as I don’t have an official signing this year.

Songs for Soldiers

Monday, 31. May 2010 12:15

It’s Memorial Day, and a post my friend Greta made about honoring the soldiers, but not necessarily the leaders who put them in harm’s way, reminded me I had written two country songs about soldiers back during the height of the Iraq War. Try to imagine Waylon Jennings singing them and maybe they’ll read a little better.

Er, and just to be clear. I am not, and have never been a soldier. Writers have the annoying habit of putting themselves in other peoples’ heads, whether they’re qualified to be there or not.

Dead Soldiers

Dead soldiers

That’s what we call the empty bottles we make when we drink

Dead soldiers

Who died on the frontlines of the battle we fight not to think

Dead soldiers

The brothers we lost in a war I don’t understand yet

Dead soldiers

The brothers whose names and whose faces we drink to forget

***

Dead soldiers

Who died for the red white and blue

Dead soldiers

Who died for me and for you

Dead soldiers

Still dead though the war wasn’t true

Dead soldiers

Yes we’re making dead soldiers

To forget the dead soldiers we knew

***

Dead soldiers

If I could forget a name for each bottle I drank

Dead soldiers

But each night they come back and line up rank after rank

Dead soldiers

Jimmy and Tommy and Frank and old Hard Luck Jose

Dead soldiers

Though I know that its hopeless I still try to drink them away

***

Dead soldiers

Who died for the red white and blue

Dead soldiers

Who died for me and for you

Dead soldiers

Still dead though the war wasn’t true

Dead soldiers

Yes we’re making dead soldiers

To forget the dead soldiers we knew

*

Honorable Men

I am a soldier

From a long line of soldiers

Who have answered our country’s call

From Ardennes to Burma

From Saigon to Anbar

We are proud to be giving our all

We pick up our packs

And we shoulder our rifles

March to hell and then right back again

No matter how weary

We do what is asked us

For we are honorable men

***

We honor a promise

And we try not to lie

We fight hard for good not for gain

And all that we ask

Of the men who lead us

Is just that they do the same

***

A soldier is a weapon

We shoot where you point us

So take care where you ask us to aim

For we’ll follow your orders

And we’ll pull the trigger

If you’re mistaken, will you take the blame?

We don’t ask for reasons

Or long explanations

Just give us a where and a when

All a soldier requires

When he walks toward the fires

Is to be led by honorable men

***

We honor a promise

And we try not to lie

We fight hard for good not for gain

And all that we ask

Of the men who lead us

Is just that they do the same

Bloodborn Reading and Q+A

Wednesday, 26. May 2010 9:40

Black Library have posted a four part promo video I did in which I read from Bloodborn, my latest book, and then answered some questions about the book. The four parts are kind of hard to find on you tube. For some reason they don’t all show up on the same page, so here they all are, collected together for your viewing pleasure.

Enjoy.

Bound for Glory!

Saturday, 24. April 2010 23:00

This is pretty cool – at least I think it is. Lisa Morton, at the Iliad Bookshop sent word to me through my pal Christa Faust that a guy had come in with leather-bound copies of my Warhammer books. Apparently he had done it himself, and they looked pretty good.

Never one to resist appeals to my vanity, I popped over there to see for myself and they did look pretty good – so I bought ‘em. And here they are!

Pretty damn cool, huh? They are, the Blackhearts Omnibus, and the Gotrek and Felix Omnibus Vol I, II and III. Whoever he was, the bookbinder didn’t just do bindings for the G+F and Blackhearts series. There were at least ten other Warhammer books in the collection, all neatly done up in black pleather.

Let me just say right here that this is the sort of thing I highly encourage. If anyone out there wants to make bound, embossed, gold-leafed, gem-encrusted or otherwise custom-crafted bindings for my books, or illustrations of their characters, or miniatures perhaps, I’m all for it, and I would love to see a snapshot or two of the finished product – which I would of course feature prominently on this blog.

Finally, to the anonymous bookbinder, let me just say, thanks! I love ‘em! Keep up the good work!

Doppelspammer

Saturday, 24. April 2010 14:27

New weird spam comments to delete. They come from normal looking addresses, but are clones of comments already left by others. For instance, Grey’s “You know me well, sir.” comment has been left by two other “people” in the last two days. What is the purpose of spam like that?

Weird.

Fliers for Friends

Wednesday, 14. April 2010 10:52

While prepping my next writing projects, I’ve also been doing some graphics work for friends who have clubs and bands. Here is some of what I’ve been working on. Click on the pics to go to the RSVP page for each.

I also did another logo for Club Romper Stomper.
